7:00 PM EST, ESPN – Spread: Florida State -7.5, Total: 58.5
Buckle up, folks, for points are likely to be scored wholesale tonight in Charlottesville, as the (No. 8) Florida State Seminoles battle the Virginia Cavaliers in a Friday night showdown between the highest-scoring sides in the ACC. Coming into this Fall, if there is one word that can be used to describe the narrative for Florida State (3-0, 0-0 in ACC), it is revenge. After an otherwise dominant 2023 campaign resulting in their first ACC title since 2014, only to be suffer a major injury at Quarterback causing them to be controversially left out of the CFP Playoff altogether, the Seminoles crashed and burned in 2024, finishing 2-10, which was their worst since 1974. Simply put, everything fell apart for (Head Coach) Mike Norvell, who saw a mass exodus of talent to the NFL Draft along with a slew of injuries and incoming transfers that (for a variety of reasons) were never quite able to catch on. By any metrics, FSU was dreadful, particularly on offense where they ranked 131st in the FBS at 15.4 points per game on just 270.3 total yards, while operating at -16 turnovers differential. As expected, Norvell absolutely cleaned house, rebuilding his coaching staff from the ground up with 6 new assistants, the most notable additions being that of (Offensive Coordinator) Gus Malzahn and (Offensive Line Coach) Herb Hand. Of course, there is a wealth of familiarity between these 3 figures, who previously worked together as assistants at Tulsa; there is a precedent for success here, as the Golden Hurricanes’ attack set an NCAA record for being the first team to field a 5,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher, and a 1,000-yard receiver. Furthermore, Malzahn’s addition as primary playcaller is notable for the fact that his offenses have generally been prolific, averaging a healthy 447.7 total yards per game over his coaching career. However, the Noles added plenty of talent to the roster too, signing 16 Division-I transfers, consisting of a cumulative 244 starts, with all but 1 of those incomings Offensive or Defensive Linemen. The lone outlier is (Senior QB) Thomas Castellanos, who has made quite an impact since transferring from Boston College, reuniting with Malzahn, who recruited him at UCF; the dual-threat has thrown for 594 yards and rushed for another 139, amassing 6 touchdowns for an offense that has been the most explosive in the country thus far. With 3 games in the books, Florida State leads the FBS with a staggering 58.0 points on 628.7 total yards, including a whopping 363.0 yards on the ground, parlaying to a very healthy 8.9 yards per play. While beating the hell out of East Texas A&M (77-3) and Kent State (66-10) likely won’t move the needle for most, 31-17 statement victory over (No. 8) Alabama made waves. After conceding the first touchdown of the afternoon, the hosts went on a torrid run in scoring 24 unanswered points and never looked back. The Seminoles outrushed the Crimson Tide 230-87, with 4 different players breaching the goal line on the ground. Castellanos (pictured below), who was rather outspoken about his opponent prior to kickoff, backed up his brash talk with 152 passing yards and a team-high 78 rushing yards, highlighted by a 9-yard scamper into the corner of the end zone to tie the game in the first quarter. The defense did a good job of keeping everything in front of them, limiting Bama’s passing attack to 5.9 yards per attempt, with 3.0 sacks and 7.0 tackles for loss. They’ll need to continue to do so in tonight’s trip to Scott Stadium, where they Wahoos have proven in the past more than capable of exploiting their weaknesses…

From a betting perspective, Florida State has logged a perfect score on both fronts through their first 3 games, winning outright as a 13.5-point underdog against Alabama, before covering the spread with relative ease versus the likes of East Texas A&M (-44) and that aforementioned drubbing of the Flashes (-45). Since arriving in Tallahassee back in 2020, Norvell is now 36-27 SU and 31-27 ATS overall, including 13-10 ATS away from Doak Campbell Stadium, 17-13 ATS when favored by the oddsmakers, 20-12 ATS coming off a win, and 19-21 ATS versus their fellow residents within the ACC. Furthermore, he is riding a 6-2 run ATS as a road favorite, with 4 consecutive covers following a rushing performance of 200+ yards. However, it should be noted that his troops are just 1-4 ATS over their past 5 road ventures, which is relevant given that tonight’s trip to Charlottesville marks their first road away game of the season. The Seminoles have also covered 6 straight outings after scoring 35+ points and getting set to face an opponent fresh off a double-digit victory, though have struggled recently in these weekday affairs (1-5 ATS). Looking at this particular matchup, FSU has owned the all-time series (15-4 SU), though tonight’s tilt is their first meeting in 6 years. When they last crossed paths, the Noles fell apart down the stretch in a spirited 31-24 defeat at Scott Stadium, blowing a 24-17 lead thanks to 21 points conceded in the fourth quarter. With that being said, Castellanos has plenty of recent experience with the Wahoos, having faced them twice during his time at Boston College; it was a mixed bag for the former Golden Eagle, who threw as many interceptions as touchdowns (4) in those contests, winning the first at Chestnut Hill (27-24) and losing last Fall’s trip to Virginia (14-24). On the injury front, we’ll have to keep an eye on Castellanos as he left last weekend’s clash with Kent State early with an undisclosed injury, though it is likely that it was just precautionary given how far that game was out of hand. (Senior Wideout) Squirrel White, a transfer from Tennessee, is also listed as questionable after missing last Saturday’s affair with a sore wrist. Looking ahead, rivalry week awaits for Florida State as they welcome (No. 2) Miami in what is shaping up to be a SEISMIC clash in Tallahassee, which if all goes according to plan tonight, will be the first time that these storied programs meet as top-10 foes since 2013, a 41-14 thumping of the Hurricanes, which helped pave the way for their most recent national championship.
Meanwhile, Virginia (3-1, 1-1 in ACC) also hit the Transfer Portal hard, with the pressure firmly on (Head Coach) Tony Elliott to turn things around in Charlottesville. It has been 5 years since the Cavaliers have qualified for a bowl, the past 3 coming under Elliott’s watch, which prompted the 45-year-old to leap into action, signing 16 newcomers of his own in an attempt to get the desired results that the program has been seeking. Again, it has been a rough 5-year run for the Wahoos, who are a dismal 22-34 overall between 2020 and 2024, including 14-26 in ACC play, with Elliott responsible for an 11-23 ledger during that span. Respected as one of the brighter offensive minds in the country following over a decade of success at Clemson where he won a pair of national titles as the Tigers’ Offensive Coordinator, he has found changing the culture at UVA much more difficult than anyone could have predicted, particularly when you consider the tragedy and adversity of 3 players being killed during a 2022 school shooting. Thankfully, the hard work looks to be paying off as the Cavs have fielded 1 of the nation’s prolific attacks through the early stages of the season, averaging 45.5 points (11th in FBS) on a robust 564.5 total yards, including 313.0 yards through the air and a healthy 7.2 yards per play. They too have an impactful transfer at QB, with the well-traveled Chandler Morris pulling the proverbial trigger in Charlottesville. Claiming this kid to be well-traveled may be an understatement, folks, as Virginia marks the FOURTH different school that he has suited up for during his lengthy collegiate career. The former Texas high school state champion began his career in 2020 at Oklahoma, before immediately moving on TCU, where he suffered an early injury before losing his starting job during surprising run the 2022 National Final. Unfortunately, he would be benched after winning the starting gig a year later, eventually entering the portal yet again, this time landing at North Texas. Morris (pictured below) would go on to lead the American Athletic Conference passing yards (3,774) and touchdowns (31) last Fall, which made him one of the more sought-after free agents in the portal. Through 4 games, the graduate has been at home within Elliott’s offense, completing an efficient 70.8% of his throws for 1,050 yards, 8 touchdowns and only 1 interception, while rushing for another 132 yards and a score for good measure. His talents were well on display in last weekend’s 48-20 romp over Stanford, hitting on 23-of-31 passes for 380 yards and 4 touchdowns, rushing for another score as well. Virginia got off to a torrid start, scoring 28 of the game’s first 35 points, with Morris connecting with (Senior Wideout) Trell Harris for 3 touchdowns in the first quarter. The Cavaliers also outrushed the Cardinal 206-35 en route to a sizable 590-321 advantage in total yards. Will they manage to keep this assault going in tonight’s visit from the Seminoles? Time will tell…

From a betting perspective, what you see is what you get with Virginia thus far, who have covered in each of their 3 victories and failed to do so in their lone defeat. Since arriving in Charlottesville back in 2022, Elliott is now 14-24 SU and 19-15-1 ATS, including 11-8 ATS at Scott Stadium, 14-10 ATS when receiving points from the oddsmakers, 7-5 ATS coming off a win, and 15-9 ATS against their fellow residents within the ACC. Furthermore, the Cavaliers have covered 11 of their last 12 games as conference dogs of 6+ points and are in the midst of a 6-game streak of covers after rushing for at least 200 yards in the previous outing. With that being said, they are also 2-10 ATS as conference dogs of less than 17 points and coming off of back-to-back SU victories, which is the case tonight. As for his ledger against ranked opposition, Elliott is just 2-6 SU yet is 5-3 ATS in such tilts, including 1-2 SU and 2-1 versus top-10 adversaries. As we touched upon earlier, the Wahoos have been at a historical disadvantage in the all-time series against the Seminoles, winning just 4 times in 23 meetings, though it should be noted that they have taken 2 of the past 3 encounters. In that aforementioned clash from 2019, they rallied back from a 17-10 deficit scoring 15 unanswered points in the final stanza en route to outgaining the visitors 415-329 in total yards. Elliott and (Defensive Coordinator) John Rudzinski should have plenty of tape on Castellanos, given they have faced him in each of the previous 2 campaigns, with the UVA defense picking him off twice in each encounter. On the injury front, (Junior Tailback) Noah Vaughn is out indefinitely after suffering a high ankle sprain in a 55-26 romp over William & Mary, while (Junior Receiver) Suderian Harrison is listed as questionable with an undisclosed malady. Looking ahead, Virginia will hit the road for a trip to Louisville next weekend before returning to Charlottesville to host Washington State.
