Bitter rivals command the spotlight tonight in Tallahassee, as the unbeaten (No. 3) Miami Hurricanes hit the road for the first time this Fall, facing the (No. 18) Florida State Seminoles, who are fresh off suffering their first loss of the campaign, an epic overtime shootout in Charlottesville. For a third year in a row, Miami (4-0, 0-0 in ACC) has gotten off to a 4-0 start, though their latest test lies in tonight’s venture to Doak Campbell Stadium, which coincidentally marks their first road game of the season. With that being said, the Hurricanes come into renewal of acquaintances with their bitter rivals having already aced their first 3 exams. First, they outplayed (No. 6) Notre Dame in a tough 27-24 affair in the opener, before manhandling upset-minded (No. 18) USF in a 49-12 drubbing, and most recently battering Florida in a 26-7 slugfest 2 weeks ago. Indeed, it appears that (Head Coach) Mario Cristobal’s troops are better suited to compete for a spot in the CFP Playoff than they were last season, where their defense crumbled in spectacular fashion down the stretch. So, what is the difference between these Hurricanes and their predecessors, you ask? Well, though 4 games it appears that this is a far more balanced team than last year’s which was carried by their prolific attack. Cristobal’s first task was fixing the defense, firing nearly the entire staff on that side of the ball before hiring Corey Heatherman to be the new Defensive Coordinator following a strong showing with Minnesota. Simply put, this has been a home run for The U, who have relegated opponents to just 11.5 points per game (9th in FBS) on 244.5 total yards, including 168.3 yards versus the pass and 76.3 against the run, with 30 tackles for floss, 10 sacks, and 6 takeaways. (Edge-Rushers) Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor have been dominated thus far, combining for 39 tackles, 7 for loss, and 4.5 sacks, with the former logging a forced fumble and even an interception as the junior is finally living up to 5-star status. The other major difference has been a more methodical offense led by (Georgia transfer) Carson Beck. Simply put, this kid had major shoes to fill following the 2024 campaign authored by (Heisman finalist) Cam Ward, who would go on to be selected first overall in the NFL Draft. Beck (pictured below), who became something of a scapegoat for the Bulldogs last Fall, has acclimated smoothly to his new surroundings, completing an ACC-best 73.2% of his throws for 243.0 yards per contest on 8.7 yards per attempt, with 7 touchdowns opposed to 3 interceptions, while rushing for another score to boot. The offense, which averaged a whopping 537 total yards a year ago, has been more measured thus far, churning out 450.5 total yards on 6.5 yards per play, with 180.5 coming on the ground. Indeed, the key for these Canes lies within the trenches, where Cristobal has assembled one of the finest Offensive Lines in the country, littered with size, athleticism, and experience. This group was key to their conquest of the Gators, whom they outgained 184-80 on the ground, with the dynamic duo of Mark Fletcher and CharMar Brown rushing for 116 and 80 yards respectively and 3 combined touchdowns. Their prowess was no more evident than in the fourth quarter where they outscored the visitors 13-0, rushing for 72 yards and a pair of scores courtesy of Fletcher and Brown.
From a betting perspective, Miami may come into this trip to Tallahassee undefeated straight-up, but they have been nearly as good against the spread (3-1 ATS), covering each of their last 2 outings against rival programs within the Sunshine State, USF (-17.5) and that aforementioned victory over Florida (-8.5). This is a school that has steadily gained momentum against their fellow Floridians, winning 7 consecutive contests versus such competition (6-1 ATS), with their last defeat coming at, you guessed it, Doak Campbell Stadium. Since returning to his alma mater 3 years ago, Cristobal is now 26-16 SU and 16-23 ATS, including 7-9 ATS away from Hard Rock Stadium, 11-16 ATS when favored by the oddsmakers, 2-4 ATS after enjoying a bye week, 3-8 ATS versus a foe harboring revenge, 8-15 ATS coming off a win, and 7-17 ATS against their fellow residents within the ACC. Furthermore, his troops are 3-9 ATS on the road versus conference opposition. The Hurricanes come into this showdown with 7 straight covers following a non-conference SU victory and set to face a league opponent with a win percentage above .600, while covering 5 of their last 6 outings immediately after relinquishing fewer than 170 passing yards. However, there are some trends working against The U as well, including a miserable 3-13 ledger ATS over their past 16 games following a cover, 1-7 ATS after shipping less than 10 points before facing a conference adversary, which is the case tonight. Looking at this particular matchup, Miami leads the all-time series by the narrowest of margins (34-33 SU), snapping a 3-game losing streak to Florida State in last year’s 36-14 victory at Hard Rock. This one was more one-sided than that score would indicate, folks, as the hosts outgained the Seminoles 445-248 in total yards, 31-14 in first downs, 230-133 in rushing yards, and 215-115 in passing yards, though sputtered during the middle of the affair in settling for 3 successive field goals. Fletcher opened their ledger with a short touchdown run on the opening drive en route to churning out 71 yards on 15 carries, while Ward was held without a touchdown for the only game all season. Bain and Mesidor were wrecking balls at the line of scrimmage, with each defender logging 3 tackles and a sack. As for Beck, he has faced FSU before, though that 63-3 blowout in the 2024 Orange Bowl saw the majority of his opponent’s starters forego the opportunity to participate in the bowl after controversially being left out of the Playoff. For his troubles, Beck completed an efficient 13-of-18 passes for 203 yards and 3 touchdowns before taking a seat midway through the second half. On the injury front, the Canes are largely healthy and rested coming off the bye week. Looking ahead, Miami will receive yet another week off after tonight’s trip to Tallahassee, before welcoming Louisville and Stanford to Hard Rock.
Meanwhile, if there is one word that can be used to describe the narrative for Florida State (3-1, 0-1 in ACC), it is revenge. After an otherwise dominant 2023 campaign resulting in their first ACC title in a decade, only to suffer a major injury at Quarterback causing them to be controversially left out of the CFP Playoff altogether, the Seminoles crashed and burned last Fall, finishing 2-10, their worst record since 1974. Simply put, everything fell apart for (Head Coach) Mike Norvell, who saw a mass exodus of talent to the NFL Draft along with a slew of injuries and incoming transfers that (for a variety of reasons) were never quite able to catch on. By any metrics, FSU was dreadful, particularly on offense where they ranked 131st in the FBS at 15.4 points per game on just 270.3 total yards, while operating with an untenable -16 turnover differential. As expected, Norvell absolutely cleaned house, rebuilding his coaching staff from the ground up with 6 new assistants, the most notable additions being that of (Offensive Coordinator) Gus Malzahn and (Offensive Line Coach) Herb Hand. Of course, there is a wealth of familiarity between these 3 figures, who previously worked together as assistants at Tulsa; the Golden Hurricanes’ attack set an NCAA record for being the first team to field a 5,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher, and a 1,000-yard receiver. Furthermore, Malzahn’s addition as primary play caller is notable for the fact that his offenses have generally been prolific, averaging a healthy 447.7 total yards per game over his coaching career. With that being said, the Noles added plenty of talent to the roster too, signing 16 Division-I transfers, led by (Senior QB) Thomas Castellanos, who has made quite an impact since transferring from Boston College, reuniting with Malzahn, who recruited him at UCF; the dual-threat has thrown for 848 yards and rushed for another 217, amassing 8 touchdowns for an offense that has been the most explosive in the country thus far. With 3 games in the books, Florida State leads the FBS with a staggering 53.0 points on 600.0 total yards, including a whopping 336.0 yards on the ground, parlaying to a very healthy 8.2 yards per play. However, the offense wasn’t the problem in last week’s entertaining 46-38 loss at Virginia, which required not 1, but 2 overtimes to crown a victor. This was quite a show, folks, as the Seminoles rallied back from an early 14-0 deficit to run off 21 unanswered points, trading scores with the Cavaliers the rest of the way. Trailing by a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, Castellanos (pictured below) found (Junior Tight End) Randy Pittman in the end zone to draw level with 36 seconds left in regulation. The 2 sides would settle for field goals in the first OT, though the Wahoos would breach the end zone with the opening possession of the second, putting the pressure on Castellanos, who very nearly matched their effort with a would-be touchdown toss to (Junior Wideout) Duce Robinson overruled by a controversial review, revealing that the bobbling reception was unsecure while his feet were inbounds. A desperate heave into the back of the end zone later, and FSU suffered their first defeat of the Fall, which was completely down to their defensive failures; Virginia amassed 440 yards of total offense, with 229 through the air and another 211 on the ground. For both sides, it was a case of the only things stopping them being themselves as Florida State and Virginia each committed 3 turnovers.
From a betting perspective, what you see is what you get with Florida State thus far, who have covered each of 3 victories, while failing to do in their lone defeat, that aforementioned trip to Charlottesville in which they were bested outright despite being favored by 6.5 points. However, this is a team that is just 1-4-1 ATS immediately following a 40-point performance, which is the case tonight. As we covered earlier, this rivalry has been about as level as it can be, with FSU trailing the all-time series 33-34 despite winning 3 of the past 4 meetings between schools. Last year’s miserable campaign featured an ugly 36-14 defeat at Hard Rock Stadium, in which the Noles struggled mightily on the offensive side of the ball, mustering just 248 total yards on 14 first downs, with (QBs) Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek combining for a pedestrian 11-of-32 passes for 115 yards versus a Miami defense that would be exploited to great measure later on in conference play. (Senior Defensive Lineman) Darrell Jackson, a former transfer from The U, rose to the occasion against his former teammates, logging 4 tackles, a pair of sacks, and a forced fumble in a losing effort. As for Castellanos, he has faced the Hurricanes once before, though it was a productive showing in an otherwise dour affair; suiting up for Boston College back in 2023, he amassed 281 total yards, including 130 on the ground with 2 total touchdowns along with a pair of interceptions in the 45-20 loss. On the injury front, the Noles are largely healthy coming into tonight’s showdown in Tallahassee. Looking ahead, Florida State will welcome a struggling Pitt side that is licking their wounds following back-to-back losses, before making the LONG trip west for a meeting with lowly Stanford on the farm.
