(7) Indiana @ (3) Oregon

October 11, 2025 by James Pasqual

3:30 PM EST, CBS – Spread: Oregon -7.5, Total: 55.5

It’s a top-10 showdown in the Pacific Northwest, as the (No. 7) Indiana Hoosiers battle the (No. 3) Oregon Ducks in a seismic battle of unbeatens who are well-rested following their toughest tests of the campaign thus far. Few head coaches have managed to raise the profile of their program in such short order as Curt Cignetti has at Indiana (5-0, 2-0 in BIG 10), who took the college football world by storm last Fall, shattering school records with their first-ever 10-win campaign, advancing to the College Football Playoff. Simply put, the Hoosiers enjoyed unprecedented success by their standards in 2024; Cignetti’s troops won more games last season than they had in the previous 3 years combined and were the only team in the FBS to improve by 100+ total yards on both sides of the football. So, what does the 64-year-old have in mind for an encore, you ask? Well, there is no more flying under the radar this time around, and Cignetti once again hit the Transfer Portal in an effort to bolster his roster to better compete in the mighty BIG 10, while 16 starters return from last year’s group. ((Junior Quarterback) Fernando Mendoza and (Senior Tailback) Roman Hemby arrive from California and Maryland respectively, while the Offensive Line saw plenty of reinforcements as well. In their lone 2 losses from last season, a 38-15 drubbing at Ohio State and a 27-17 defeat to Notre Dame in the opening round of the Playoff, IU was manhandled at the line of scrimmage, which is something that Cignetti has gone out of his way to rectify. As a result, this has been arguably the most balanced attack int he country, averaging 47.8 points (4th in FBS) on a robust 538.2 total yards, which is well over 100 yards better than their output in 2024, with 267.8 yards coming on the ground and 270.4 yards via the pass. Mendoza (pictured below) has acclimated quickly after spending 2 years starting at Cal, completing an efficient 73.0% of his throws for 1,208 yards on 9.9 yards per attempt, with a BIG 10-best 16 touchdowns and a near perfect passer rating of 197.8. He and the Hoosiers have aced their first true tests of the campaign, wiping the floor with (No. 9) Illinois in a 63-10 annihilation in Bloomington, before going to Iowa City and besting Iowa in a hard-fought 20-15 affair. These victories couldn’t have been more different, folks; Indiana outgained the Illini 579-161 in total yards, including 312-2 in rushing yards, with Mendoza tossing a career-high 5 touchdowns, while the battle with the Hawkeyes featured a late rally courtesy of the former Golden Bear. Trailing 13-10 midway through the fourth quarter, the visitors drew level on a 44-yard field goal courtesy of (Sophomore Kicker) Nicolas Radicic, before Mendoza engineered a 76-yard drive that took all of 33 seconds off the clock to take the lead. In truth, he completed just 2 passes, but that would be all he needed, hitting (former JMU transfer) Elijah Sarratt for the game-winning 49-yard touchdown. When it was all said and done, Indiana proved that they could win in a hostile environment in such fashion, outgaining the hosts 337-284 in total yards, while forcing a pair of turnovers and getting a crucial late stop on fourth down, turning away their opponent at midfield with 16 seconds remaining. Mendoza threw for 233 yards, a pair of touchdowns and an interception on 13-of-23 passing, while Sarratt hauled in 7 receptions for 156 yards and that go-ahead score. (Defensive Backs) Louis Moore and Amare Ferrell each had an interception, while (Junior Linebacker) Isaiah Jones was all over the place with 8 tackles, 1.5 for loss, 0.5 sacks, and a deflected pass.

From a betting perspective, Indiana may come into this trip to Eugene undefeated straight-up, but they haven’t remained perfect against the spread (3-2), failing to cover spread in that narrow victory in Iowa City (-9.5). With that being said, this has been one of the most rewarding teams in the country since Cignetti took over a year ago, with the outspoken coach 16-2 SU and 11-6 ATS overall, including 3-3 ATS away from Bloomington, 0-2 ATS when receiving points from the oddsmakers, 1-2 ATS coming off a bye, 10-4 ATS following a win, and 8-3 ATS versus their fellow residents within the BIG 10. Furthermore, the Hoosiers have covered 4 consecutive contests in the month of October, while posting a stellar 5-1 ledger ATS over their last 6 outings immediately after a non-cover. However, it should be noted that this is a team that has also failed to cover 4 of their last 5 games following a bye week, which is the case this afternoon. Looking at this particular matchup, these schools may call themselves neighbors now that their residing within the same conference, but this encounter will mark just their fourth all-time on the gridiron, and the first since 2004. IU upset (No. 24) Oregon in a 30-24 affair in Eugene, racing out to a 23-0 lead and forcing an insane 7 turnovers on the day, 4 of which were recovered fumbles. Mendoza is rather familiar with the Ducks, having made the trip to Eugene back in 2023 when he was a member of the Bears, throwing for 177 yards and an interception in a 63-19 blowout loss at Autzen Stadium. On the injury front, (UAB transfer) Lee Beebe is out for the rest of the season after suffering a leg injury in a win over Indiana State back on September 12th, while (Junior Cornerback) D’Angelo Ponds, who was one of the many transfers to follow Cignetti from James Madison, is listed as questionable with an undisclosed malady. Ponds tallied 3 interceptions, 9 pass deflections, and a pick-6 last Fall, while logging another pick earlier this season. Looking ahead, Indiana will return to Bloomington next weekend for homecoming against Michigan State, whom they embarrassed in a 49-10 drubbing in East Lansing last year.

Meanwhile, awaiting them in Eugene is Oregon (5-0, 2-0 in BIG 10), who are fresh off their biggest win of the season and arguably the biggest victory of the Dan Lanning era, a triumphant 30-24 overtime affair at (No. 3) Penn State. Simply put, that showdown in Happy Valley was set up to be the site of their first loss of the campaign, but Lanning wasn’t having any of it as his troops left a raucous Beaver Stadium with their perfect record intact. Points were at a premium for most of the night before the visitors finally broke through with a back-to-back touchdowns on opposite sides of the end of the third frame, building a 17-3 lead. However, the Nittany Lions would claw their way back into the affair, drawing level with just 30 seconds left before the game went to OT. After trading touchdowns in the first extra period, the Ducks struck quickly with a 25-yard touchdown from (Quarterback) Dante Moore to (Senior Wideout) Gary Bryant, before (Purdue transfer) Dillon Thieneman picked off Drew Allar on a short throw to the sideline, ending the game altogether. When it was all said and done, the birds were clearly the better side in this one with a 424-276 advantage in total yards, with the difference being the play of Moore (pictured below), who had his first true coming out moment since transferring from UCLA. Indeed, the 5-star recruit lived up to the hype with 248 yards and 3 touchdowns on an efficient 29-of-39 passing against one of, if not the toughest defense in the country, overcoming a slow start to eventually exploit the holes in coverage. There were questions as to how Oregon would transition from (Heisman finalist) Dillon Gabriel to the talented Moore, but any concerns were quickly debunked with this performance. On the season, he has been as advertised with 14 touchdowns in comparison to just a single interception, averaging 242.0 yards 9.0 yards per attempt and completing a surgical 74.6% throws. The offense hasn’t missed a beat with him at the helm, averaging a prolific 46.6 points (6th in FBS) on 503.8 total yards, including 264.4 through the air and another 239.4 on the ground. The defense also continued to play at a high level, though that should come as no surprise with Lanning in charge; the 39-year-old made a name for himself coordinating Georgia’s national title-winning defense, and has done a tremendous job infusing the roster with SEC-caliber talent, particularly in the trenches. Thus far, the Ducks have shipped just 12.2 points (8th in FBS) on 238.2 total yards, proving particularly tough on opposing QBs, who have completed just 52.1% of their throws for 123.4 yards on 5.2 yards per attempt. Furthermore, this unit has created plenty of havoc with 9.0 sacks, 22.0 tackle for loss, and 8 takeaways with a pair of interceptions returned to the house for good measure.

From a betting perspective, Oregon is also 5-0 straight-up, but they have been a bit more rewarding against the spread (4-1), with their lone failure on that latter front coming in their BIG 10 opener, a 34-14 victory bright and early at Northwestern (-24.5). It is fairly rare to find such a powerhouse favored by so little points, though the Ducks were getting 4 points in that successful trip to Happy Valley, which was only the fifth time since 2022 that these birds were underdogs. Since arriving in Eugene, Lanning is now 40-6 SU and 27-15-1 ATS overall, including 14-6 ATS at Autzen Stadium, 25-12 ATS when favored by the oddsmakers, 3-3 ATS when coming off a bye week, 24-12 ATS following a win, and 19-12 ATS against their fellow residents within the BIG 10. Furthermore, his troops have covered 5 of their last 6 games contested on FieldTurf, are 9-2 ATS over their past 11 outings played in the month of October, and are 4-1 ATS in 5 meeting with foes residing above .500. As we touched upon earlier, these schools are meeting just the fourth time ever on the gridiron, with this afternoon’s clash marking the first time in which they have crossed paths since 2004, which was nothing short of a disappointment for the faithful in the Pacific Northwest, who witnessed their beloved birds upset in a sloppy season opener. There were a ridiculous 9 turnovers committed in this one, folks, with 7 being charged to the home side, who lost a quartet of fumbles and were picked off 3 times for good measure. With that being said, UO very nearly erased a 23-0 deficit, drawing within one score midway through the fourth quarter, but could get no closer in the loss, which served as a harbinger of things to come for a team that would go to finish 5-6, which was their only losing campaign between 1994 and 2015. On the injury front, (Senior Offensive Lineman and Texas State transfer) Alex Harkey has been dealing with a leg malady all season and is once again listed as questionable, though the big fella has featured in all 5 games. Looking ahead, Oregon will make the long trek eastward to the Garden State to face Rutgers next weekend, before returning to Eugene to hosts struggling Wisconsin for homecoming.

Projected Outcome: Oregon 34, Indiana 24
