8:15 PM EST, ESPN/ABC – Spread: Steelers -3.0, Total: 41.0
A pair of classic franchises desperately vying for the playoffs clash tonight in Western Pennsylvania, as the surging Miami Dolphins battle the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are clinging to a tenuous division lead, on Monday Night Football from Acrisure Stadium. A little over a month ago, the Dolphins (6-7, 3rd in AFC East) were left for dead and very much staring at an uncertain future following an ugly 2-7 start. Just about everything that could go wrong for Miami did so during this calamitous stretch, with a renovated defense left depleted by injury, while the attack, which for all intents and purposes was neutered due to the safeguards placed upon (veteran Quarterback) Tua Tagovailoa, lost (Pro-Bowl Wideout) Tyreek Hill for the rest of the season and beyond due to an ugly knee injury suffered in their first victory, which was ironically a 27-21 affair on MNF. Then the Trade Deadline came and went with the Fins looking to the future as they shipped off their most impactful defender, (Edge-Rusher) Jalen Phillips in a deal with the Eagles for a third-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. With rumors swirling that (Head Coach) Mike McDaniel could be relieved of his duties at any moment, it would be (longtime General Manager) Chris Grier that paid the price after a decade on the job. Roster construction had been a persistent point of contention for quite some time and Grier ultimately paid the price. However, few could have foreseen a turnaround following the departure of a high-level executive, but the Dolphins have since responded with four consecutive victories in a span of five weeks. So, what in the name of Larry Csonka has happened in South Florida, you ask? Well, McDaniel has completely flipped the script and transitioned the offense into a run-oriented attack, powered by (Pro-Bowl Tailback) De’Von Achane. During this streak, they have churned out a whopping 192.3 rushing yards per game on 5.7 yards per carry, with Achane (pictured below) shedding the narrative of being a shifty speed RB that couldn’t carry the bulk of carries due to his slight frame, accounting for 130.0 yards per contest on 7.2 yards per rush. As a result, the offense as a whole has been more consistently productive than it has been at any previous point this season, scoring 25.3 points on 334.3 total yards, cracking the 30-point threshold twice after doing so just once in the first nine outings. While easing the load of responsibility for Tagovailoa, this shift in approach has also helped the defense immensely, with (Defensive Coordinator) Anthony Weaver’s troops benefitting by not spending so much time on the field. Miami has relinquished 13.3 points on 314.0 total yards over the past four games, while logging fourteen sacks and ten takeaways along the way. Sure, the Commanders, Saints, and Jets are hardly the most potent opponents from an offensive perspective, but holding Buffalo, who hung 31 points on them back in late September, to 13 points with three turnovers is a different matter altogether. Last week, they permitted just 207 total yards at New York, holding them to 1-of-12 on third down and securing another three takeaways, while totaling a season-high SIX sacks to boot. Again, less is more with a group that was on the field for just 23:53 of action, as the rushing attack eviscerated Gang Green to the tune of 239 yards and three touchdowns on an industrious 41 attempts. The victory has positioned Miami on the fringe of a Wild Card spot, alongside three other teams trailing the Texans for the final seed in the AFC. With four games left, a surprise trip to the postseason sounds improbable, but far from impossible, with that in itself likely to secure McDaniel as the Head Coach moving forward. This performance was also notable for Tua (13-of-21, 127 yards, 1 TD), who earned his first career win when the temperature was below was 46 degrees or colder, having lost each of his first SEVEN affairs under such conditions. This is something to keep in mind as the projected temperature for kickoff tonight is in realm of below freezing.

From a betting perspective, the Dolphins may come into tonight’s showdown at 6-7 straight-up, but they have flipped that ledger against the spread (7-6), parlaying to a net profit of 0.36 units. This is a team that has been more than a solid play falling a slow start, covering seven of their last eleven outings, including last weekend’s romp over Gang Green (-2.5). Since arriving in South Beach in 2022, McDaniel is now 34-32 SU and 33-32-1 ATS overall, including 17-16 ATS away from Hard Rock Stadium, 13-16 ATS when receiving points from the oddsmakers, 17-16 ATS following a win, and 17-24 ATS versus all opposition residing outside of the AFC East. Furthermore, his troops are in the midst of a 17-5 run ATS immediately after relegating a foe below 90 rushing yards, though have covered just one of their last five contests following a cover, while mirroring that record after hammering an opponent by at least fifteen points in the previous game. Miami is also just 1-4 ATS against a non-division adversary coming off an outright win as an underdog, which is precisely the case tonight. Dating back to 1990, this is a franchise that is certainly no stranger to Monday Night Football, posting a 29-40 ATS CV in such games, including a dismal 3-12 ATS as a road dog. Looking at this particular matchup, the all-time series between these classic teams stands in favor of the Steelers by the narrowest of margins (15-14 SU), though it should be noted that the underdog has covered five of the last six encounters. After a 5-game losing streak to the Steel Curtain, the Fins have managed to turn the tide with three victories in their last five meetings, which includes their most recent, a 16-10 defensive struggle from 2022. Set in the heat and humidity of South Beach, the hosts gradually built a 13-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, before the visitors scored ten unanswered points in the second period. However, (veteran Kicker) Jason Sanders would drill his third field goal of the half to stretch the lead back to six points just before the stroke of halftime. From there, neither team could add to their total, as Miami’s defense forced FIVE straight punts before coming up with interceptions on back-to-back drives with Pittsburgh threatening to score. When it was all said and done, three takeaways proved to be the difference in which both sides struggled to get much done once they passed midfield. Tagovailoa went 21-of-35 passing for 261 yards and a touchdown to (Former Tailback) Raheem Mostert, who amassed 129 yards from scrimmage on 20 touches. (Veteran Wideout) Jaylen Waddle hauled in four of five targets for 88 yards, while the aforementioned Hill was targeted THIRTEEN times, reeling in seven for 72 yards of his own. Getting back to Tua, that was the only time that he had crossed paths with the Steel Curtain, while his ledger on MNF is positive as well; he is now 3-1 SU with a completion percentage of 70.5% for an average of 205.5 yards on 7.15 net yards per attempt, four touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. As for his history ATS, the Alabama product is now 41-33 ATS overall, including 17-18 ATS on the road, 18-16 ATS as a dog, 24-21 ATS following a win, 15-14 ATS coming off back-to-back victories, and 24-26 ATS versus non-division opponents, with by far and away his worst role coming as… you guessed it, a road dog (9-12 ATS). On the injury front, McDaniel & Co have dealt with a bevy of them throughout the campaign with thirteen players currently on Injured Reserve, the most prominent being Hill, who will likely miss most of next season after dislocating his knee and tearing multiple ligaments in the process. Keep an eye on Achane as well, with the explosive RB dealing with bruised ribs that have left him questionable to participate in tonight’s primetime showdown in Western Pennsylvania. (Veteran Cornerback) Rasul Douglas (foot) and (Sophomore Edge) Chop Robinson (oblique) are also questionable with various maladies. Looking ahead, the Dolphins will return to South Beach to host the desperate Bengals, before another desperate side, the fading Buccaneers, pay them a visit in the penultimate week of the campaign.
Meanwhile, it has been a very different story for the Steelers (7-6, 1st in AFC North), who came into the campaign with much higher expectations, though have tailed off considerably after a promising start and are thus clinging to their lead in the division. That last bit is significant, folks, for given how uncharacteristically mediocre the AFC North has been this season, it is looking like the only avenue towards getting to the playoffs is via winning said division. After collapsing down the stretch and getting embarrassed in the opening round of the 2024 Playoffs, Pittsburgh went all in as (longtime Head Coach) Mike Tomlin opted to place all of his proverbial chips on the table; the team was surprisingly aggressive in the offseason, acquiring the services of several veteran talents, including (Pro-Bowl Wideout) D.K. Metcalf, (3-time All-Pro Defensive Back) Jalen Ramsey, and (4-time MVP Quarterback) Aaron Rodgers, while securing the services of a number of their own aging vets. With the shifting landscape within the AFC seeing so many of the traditional powers struggle early on, it had appeared that the Steel Curtain was gifted a golden opportunity to build a comfortable cushion, particularly following an inspiring 4-1 start. However, sustainability has proven to be elusive for a team that has been leaking oil for two months now. Over the past eight weeks, the Steelers are just 3-5, all but wasting their cushion within the division; the offense has been erratic at best, averaging 23.6 points on just 288.6 total yards, including 196.1 yards via the pass on 5.82 net yards per attempt, while the ground game has managed a meager 92.5 yards on 4.2 yards per carry, with an overall turnover differential of +2 (which is misleading due to 6 takeaways in a win over Indianapolis). With each week, the passing game has regressed more into the antiquated short passing-game that Rodgers (pictured below) has favored throughout his career, with the 42-year-old now dealing with multiple broken bones in his non-throwing wrist. While it is understandable that a QB at his age is reticent to place himself in harm’s way for long, the fact that he went six weeks without completing a single pass beyond 20 yards encapsulates the issues that have plagued this unit. Simply put, this guy is many years removed from being the elite tier passer he was during his prime, and even with the organization catering to his needs and getting him a vertical weapon such as Metcalf, this marriage between QB and club hasn’t netted the desired results. Coupled with the downturn of the whole defense this season, and you can perfectly understand the fans’ frustration as they loudly booed the Steelers during the accustomed playing of Renegade at the beginning of the fourth quarter of an eventual loss to the Bills, in which they were trampled to the tune of 249 rushing yards!!! Seriously, folks, they were even chanting “Fire Mike Tomlin!” at one point, which is amazing considering how successful the 53-year-old has been during his nineteen years in Western Pennsylvania. And it is with that in mind that last weekend’s 27-22 victory over bitter rival, Baltimore, felt like more of a stay of execution than a success. Pittsburgh raced out to a 17-6 advantage as Rodgers aggressively pushed the ball downfield, even snapping that dubious streak with a beautiful 52-yard bomb to Metcalf, which eventually led to a rushing touchdown by the veteran QB. The Ravens, who have dealt with a host of problems of their own this year, climbed back into the affair and threatened throughout the second half, though were forced to settle for field goals, before running out of time in enemy territory. There is no denying that the visitors benefitted from some good fortune too, including a deflected pass that Rodgers vied for possession of with a defender that was controversially ruled in favor of the gunslinger. There was also what appeared to be a go-ahead touchdown by the Blackbirds with 2:47 left to play, that was also overruled as (Tight End) Isaiah Likely lost possession seemingly simultaneously after breaking the plane of the end zone, eventually leading to a fourth-down stop at the 8-yard line. When it was all said and done, Tomlin & Co managed to find a way to secure a road victory against a division rival despite being outgained 420-318 in total yards, 217-34 in rushing yards, 22-13 in first downs, and possessing the ball for just 26:16 of action. Rodgers turned back the clock with 284 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns, while Metcalf had his finest performance since arriving in Pittsburgh with seven receptions for 148 yards. (Veteran Edge) Alex Highsmith and (Young Cornerback) Brandin Echols each had a sack, while (fellow Defensive Back) James Pierre accounted for the game’s lone turnover, a second-quarter interception of Lamar Jackson eventually leading to his team’s second touchdown of the afternoon.

From a betting perspective, the Steelers clock in tonight at 7-6 straight-up and have almost mirrored that ledger against the spread (6-6-1), equating to a net loss of 0.55 units. This is a team has been fairly easy to call on that latter front, covering the spread in all but one of their seven wins and all but one of their six defeats, including last weekend’s upset in Baltimore (+5.5). Since arriving in Western Pennsylvania back in 2007, Tomlin is now 198-124-2 SU and 163-149-12 ATS overall, including 86-70 ATS at Acrisure Stadium, 98-107 ATS when favored by the oddsmakers, 92-89-1 ATS following a win, and 99-100-1 ATS versus all opposition residing outside of the AFC North. Furthermore, his troops have covered four of their last five contests immediately after rushing for less than 90 yards, are 13-4 ATS after an outright win as an underdog, and 6-1 ATS when fresh off of a SU win as a dog versus a division adversary. However, Pittsburgh is in the midst of a 1-5 stretch ATS following a defensive performance in which they had shipped 350+ total yards, while also struggling against AFC East sides, covering only one of their last eight meetings with such foes, which is the case tonight. Dating back to 1990, this is also a franchise that is certainly no stranger to Monday Night Football, though they have been far more successful than their counterpart tonight (37-27 ATS), including 15-10 ATS as a home favorite, with four covers over their past five appearances on MNF regardless of their role. As we touched upon earlier, the Steel Curtain owns a narrow 15-14 edge in the all-time series with the Dolphins, though have lost three of the past five encounters, including that aforementioned 16-10 slugfest on South Beach from three years ago. Needless to say, this was nothing short of an ugly performance from Pittsburgh, who couldn’t muster much of anything past halftime, punting on five consecutive possessions, three of which were three-and-outs, while turning it over on each of their final two drives despite being in relative field goal range. With all that being said, this was a rather different team than the one we can expect tonight; their leading passer was Kenny Pickett, while Najee Harris paced them in rushing, with George Pickens chief among the receiving corps, and none of those individuals are even with the team anymore. Moving back to the present, their current QB is 4-2 all-time against Miami, completing 62.5% of his throws for an average of 271.2 yards on 6.99 net yards per attempt, with twelve touchdowns opposed to three interceptions, while rushing for another score to boot. Rodgers is also 13-10 over his career on Monday Night Football, logging 44 total scores in comparison to seventeen turnovers. As for his ledger ATS, the Cal product is now 152-115 ATS overall, including 81-50 ATS at home, 111-85 ATS as a favorite, 88-74 ATS following a win, and 93-84 ATS versus non-division foes. On the injury front, Tomlin currently has nine players on Injured Reserve with the most recent addition being by far and away the most significant, as (4-time All-Pro Edge) T.J. Watt underwent emergency surgery to repair a partially collapsed lung earlier in the week. As you can imagine, this is a MAJOR loss for a defense that has really struggled to find consistency this season, with the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year having logged seven sacks, eighteen QB hits, 26 pressures, and ten tackles for loss thus far, with seven deflected passes to boot. For those wondering, Pittsburgh is a dreadful 1-10 in games in which Watt has missed throughout his stellar career. Looking ahead, the road to the playoffs doesn’t get any easier for the Steelers, who must travel to the Motor City to face the equally desperate Lions, followed by a pair of division battles with the Browns and Ravens, with that latter affair potentially deciding the AFC North.
