NCAA Tournament – First Round: (10) Missouri vs (7) Miami (FL)

March 20, 2026 by James Pasqual

10:10 PM EST, TruTV – Spread: Miami -1.5, Total: 150.5

The First Round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament comes to a close tonight in St. Louis, as the (10 Seed) Missouri Tigers hope to enjoy some home-cooking as they prepare to face the (7 Seed) Miami Hurricanes in what is expected to be an evenly matched affair. For the third time in four years, Missouri (20-12, 10-8 in SEC) are dancing, though it took a lot of work to receive their invitation on Selection Sunday. The Tigers got off to a strong 8-0 start, only to go a mediocre 12-12 the rest of the way, but it was clearly the quality of some of those victories that endeared themselves to the Selection Committee; three wins over Ap-ranked sides, including an upset of (1 Seed) Florida (76-74) ultimately punched their ticket. (Head Coach) Dennis Gates has amassed a deep, large, athletic group that became one of the tougher defensive sides in the SEC, ranking third in conference in points allowed (78.0), sixth in field goal percentage relinquished (44.6%), and third in two-point percentage permitted (50.0%). While they can be a bit tough to watch on the offensive end of the court, they are rather industrious when it comes to getting to the charity stripe. Mizzou averages 25.4 free-throw attempts in league play, which is good for second in the SEC, netting 17.6 singles along the way (5th in SEC). It is no coincidence that teams who get to the line as frequently as they do are also usually pretty good defensively, for stopping the clock and shooting free-throws allows you to get back and set up your halfcourt defense, rather than being exposed in transition. (Senior Forward) Mark Mitchell is the poster boy for this aspect of the team, with the Kansas City native leading the conference in free-throws attempted (256), netting 170 along the way, which accounts for roughly 29.0% of his total point production. Mitchell (pictured below) has been quite a tear coming into the big dance, erupting for 32 points in each of the Tigers’ last two outings, an 88-84 overtime loss in the regular season finale against Arkansas, and a 78-72 loss in last week’s SEC Tournament versus Kentucky. The former Duke transfer shot a cumulative 58.5% from the field in those contests along with 13-of-18 from the stripe (72.2%), while filling out the stat sheet with 11 rebounds and 5 assists. The latter of those matchups saw Gates’ charges fall into a hole and spend the bulk of the second half trying to climb out of it, trailing by as many as 16 points. Despite shooting a stellar 47.3% overall and 5-of-13 from downtown (38.5%), Missouri was ultimately the architect of their own demise, committing far more turnovers (15) than assists (10), which led to giving up 17 points in transition. Again, this is a case in which they really couldn’t control the tempo by planting their flag at the free-throw line (15-of-23 FT), allowing the Wildcats plenty of opportunities on the break.

From a betting perspective, Missouri returns to the big dance at 14-18 against the spread, parlaying to a net loss of 5.40 units. This is a team that has certainly been streaky in that regard, for over their final fifteen outings, they failed to cover five consecutive contests, followed by a 6-1 stretch ATS, only wrap things up with a 3-game losing streak ATS. The Tigers are a middling 7-7 ATS thus far when receiving points from the oddsmakers, though it should be noted that they haven’t covered any of their last five tilts played at neutral sites, while matching that ledger in their past five games immediately following a SU loss. Furthermore, these cats have struggled for quite some time in the tourney, posting a 1-8 record ATS over their last nine such games on this stage. All-time, this is a program that is making their 32nd appearance in the NCAA Tournament, owning a 23-30 SU CV along the way, with their best-ever finish being the Elite 8. However, this overall competition has been rather challenging for Mizzou, who haven’t progressed past the opening weekend since the 2009 Regional Final, with three first-round eliminations over the past seven years. Looking at this particular matchup, the Tigers have crossed paths with the Hurricanes only once on the hardwood, which ironically also came in the big dance, a 93-80 victory in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, with Gates & Co hoping that this sequel features a similar outcome. Even with that in mind, the public doesn’t appear to be overly enthusiastic in Missouri’s chances of progressing tonight, as approximately 38% of all wagers placed upon the spread are sporting Tigers’ stripes. On the injury front, (Senior Forward) Jevon Porter has been out since mid-January with a leg injury, while (Sophomore Guard) Annor Boateng was lost for the season in early February. Though these two are certainly reserves within Gates’ rotation, it should be noted that this a very deep rotation with each of these players logging over eleven minutes per game. Porter, for instance, posted 6.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in twelve games, ten of which were actually starts. Looking ahead, if Mizzou proves victorious tonight, then they will advance to Sunday’s Second Round matchup where they will face either (2 Seed) Purdue or (15 Seed) Queens.

Meanwhile, one of the better stories in this tournament field is that of Miami (25-8, 13-5 in ACC) who improved by a whopping EIGHTEEN wins under the leadership of (Head Coach) Jai Lucas. Of course, the 37-year-old enjoying such success in just his first year as a HC shouldn’t come as a surprise given his roots: he is the son of John Lucas II, an All-American at Maryland and a 14-year NBA veteran, and the younger brother of John Lucas III, who was a standout at both Baylor and Oklahoma State. Furthermore, he cut his teeth as an assistant coach under the likes of Shaka Smart (Texas), John Calipari (Kentucky), and Jon Scheyer (Duke), earning a reputation as one of the top recruiters in the country, which is evident given the construction of his roster. Indeed, Lucas tapped heavily into the Transfer Portal, with four of the top-six players in his rotation arriving from other schools, including seniors such as Malik Reneau (Indiana) and Tre Donaldson (Michigan), who combine for 35.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 7.8 assists, along with (Junior Guard) Tru Washington (New Mexico), who adds another 12.1 points, 3.9 boards, and 1.7 assists to boot. Furthermore, he has brought in some heralded freshman, including Shelton Henderson and Dante Allen, ranked 22nd and 60th in the 2025 recruiting class, while also reaching out overseas with Timotej Malovec, Noam Dovart, and Salih Altuntas representing Serbia, Israel, and Türkiye respectively. Put it altogether and you have a balanced team on both ends of the hardwood, that is adept at getting into the paint and like their opponent tonight, planting their flag at the charity stripe. The Canes rank second in the ACC offensive field goal percentage (49.2%), with the bulk of that production coming within the arc where they sit atop the conference in both two-pointers attempted (39.5) and made (29.2). They have also shot more free-throws than any of their neighbors within the league (21.8), which as we covered earlier with the Tigers, allows them to control the tempo of the affair and refrain from being exploited in transition. However, if there is a criticism of Miami, it is that they haven’t done enough against the better teams on their schedule, going just 2-4 against AP-ranked opposition. They were blown out by (1 Seed) Florida (82-68) back in mid-November, while being bested by ten points apiece versus the likes of BYU and Clemson. Granted, they did upset North Carolina in early February and edged past Louisville in the opening round of the ACC Tournament, but were hardly a problem for Virginia, who disposed of them for the second time in less than a month. Granted, we know how conference tourneys often go, folks, with one team playing a back-to-back taking on another who has had close to a week off. That was the case in this 84-62 tilt, as the Hurricanes were clearly out of gas from the opening tip en route to being outscored 38-23 in the first half. This would prove to be a bridge too far for Lucas & Co, who allowed the Cavaliers to shoot 52.5% from the field, 20-of-33 from within the arc (60.6%) and 11-of-26 beyond it (42.3%), while being outrebounded 35-21 along the way. Conversely, Miami could muster just 38.6% shooting themselves, while struggling to move the basketball with much fluidity at all, totaling a scant 6 assists on the day.

From a betting perspective, Miami comes into this opening weekend of the tourney at 18-15 ATS, resulting in a small profit of 1.20 units. This is a team that has certainly been in rewarding form of late, covering seven of their final ten outings, though fell well short of the mark at 3.5-point underdogs in that aforementioned blowout loss to Virginia in last week’s ACC Tournament. The Hurricanes are 12-11 ATS when favored by the oddsmakers this season, including a 3-1 ledger ATS when laying three or fewer points, which is the case tonight. Furthermore, Lucas’ troops are 6-1 ATS in their last seven tilts immediately following a SU loss, while covering five of their past six games coming off a non-cover. It should also be noted that the ‘Canes are in the midst of 13-3-1 run ATS when playing on Fridays. All-time, this is a program making their fourteenth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, owning a 15-12 SU record, which includes one trip to the Final 4, achieved three years ago. The U has generally performed well on this stage of late, having advanced past the first weekend of the big dance in four of their last six tourneys. As we covered earlier, Miami and Missouri have tangled on the hardwood only once before, that aforementioned 93-80 affair in the opening round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament. However, the public is clearly looking more at recent form, as roughly 62% of all wagers placed upon tonight’s spread are backing the Hurricanes, with a much larger of the total sum of money being wagered on this contest following suit. On the injury report, Lucas has a largely healthy team at his disposal with no major injuries to be reported at this time. Looking ahead, if Miami wins tonight, they will be pitted against either Purdue or Queens in Sunday’s Second Round.

Projected Outcome: Miami 82, Missouri 78
