The Oracle’s 2026 Triple Crown Extravaganza
As we begin the absolute most exciting time of the horse racing year, first let’s reflect on all that has been accomplished so far. We’ve had a grueling long prep season which all started with Spice Runner winning the Iroquois at Churchill Downs on Sept. 13th and ended 46 races later on April 11th with Trendsetter winning the Lexington and paying $67. Over that time frame, we’ve got a chance to see horses like Brad Cox’s Commandment win 4 out of his last 5 races to become the co-favorite and points leader at 150. BTW, the Florida Derby has produced more Derby winners than any other prep race ~19%). Renegade (for all you Steelers fans out there), is 3rd in the points ranking with 125, and is the highlight of the Pletcher barn. He is owned by the Repole barn which is always a deadly combination with Pletcher (although Repole is 0-8 in the Derby with only 1 top-5 finish). I’ll leave you with a sneaky good longshot in So Happy. He is trained by Mark Glatt, who happens to be a stone cold marksmen when entering a horse in certain situations. This horse fits the bill of “which one doesn’t belong” because of his speed pedigree but has countered by showing his ability to handle distance. Remember, the Santa Anita Derby has produced the 2nd amount of Kentucky Derby winners at 19 (~11%) and this might just be the right situation for this horse.
The Kentucky Derby field is rounding into form and as it does, so do we! For years, we’ve been the go to handicapper for the Prep races as we just seem to be a little more connected to the heartbeat of the horses, trainers, and jockeys than others. However, over the last five years, we’ve managed to over exceed by really putting it to the competition for the Derby as well. While in my mind, nothing will ever beat our satisfying win of War Emblem in 2002 when we told everyone to pound him and he still paid $41, sweeping the Kentucky Derby for 5 years straight is no small feat. Especially since Justify ($7.80) and Nyquist ($6.60) were 2 of only 9 horses to finish the Derby undefeated since 1915. Adding in Always Dreaming ($11.40), California Chrome ($7), and the unforgettable American Pharoah ($7.80), who all helped catapult us to our Triple Crown Championship Title that year, just goes to prove that we’re both strong and consistent when it comes to being reliable in the Run For The Roses.
This Year, we have a huge opportunity that we are extending to you that will enable us to really get to know each other and work together throughout the Triple Crown season. Not only are we going to deliver for the Derby, but we’ve put together a great package that will let you try us out over the 2 month period and see exactly what we’re capable of. Triple Crown Horses To Watch:
One of the main things that my clients used to like was when I teased ‘em with my watch list. Every once in a while I’d give them a few of the upcoming horses that I had my eye on. Whether or not they were shipping into a new track location or just getting primed and into top condition for their next race, they knew that when I had my eye on one, they should too. Just for ol’ time sake, here are a few up and coming Triple Crown potentials for you:
- Renegade – Known for the fastest final eighth of a mile (:11.84) in his prep race (Arkansas Derby), signaling he has the “gas” to finish the full Derby distance.
- Commandment – A “grinder” with tactical speed; he enters on a four-race win streak and is considered one of the most battle-tested in the field.
- The Puma – A “hot horse” from the barn that produced 2023 winner Mage; experts watch his late-maturing Essential Quality bloodline for a potential peak on Saturday.
- So Happy – Trained by Mark Glatt and ridden by Hall of Famer Mike Smith, he enters after a definitive win and is sired by champion sprinter Runhappy. While some experts worry about his stamina at 10 furlongs, his dam side includes Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Blame, providing a crucial late-distance boost.
- Potente – A $2.4 million purchase trained by Bob Baffert. He was the runner-up in the Santa Anita Derby and has been training “forwardly” at Churchill Downs all week. A son of leading sire Into Mischief, his dam is out of the champion turf mare Perfect Sting, suggesting he may have the class to overcome a wide trip.
- Incredibolt – Trained by Riley Mott (son of legendary Bill Mott), he earned his way in by winning the Virginia Derby. He could be a “sleeper” pick because he possesses a high Beyer Speed Figure (111+) and has shown he can overcome significant track adversity.
- Six Speed – A wild card entrant trained by Bhupat Seemar from Dubai. He was the runner-up in the UAE Derby and recently clocked a sharp half-mile work in :48.80 at Churchill. He’s out of By Not This Time so his front-running style makes him a threat to lead early, though many doubt he can maintain that pace through the final quarter-mile “stampede”.
